Dr. Sunil Kakarla
DVM, Ph.D., Owner
As a graduate student, Dr. Kakarla performed cutting-edge research and had several high impact publications to his credit. While pursuing graduate studies, he simultaneously completed the North American Veterinary Licensing Exam (NAVLE) in 2010. Soon after this accomplishment, he began volunteering at several local animal hospitals. He completed his clinical experience program and obtained his license to practice in the US the same year.
With his continued passion to provide the best quality veterinary care, he joined the state-of-the-art Walnut Street Animal Hospital in June 2016. As a veterinarian in the RTP area of NC, he strongly believes in quality care for pets and in being available to his patients when needed.
Sunil Kakarla is a member of the American Veterinary Medical Association and has special interests in dermatology and soft tissue and orthopedic surgery, as well as emergency medicine. Dr. Kakarla is married and has a son and a daughter. He enjoys spending quality time with his family, including his 1-year-old Golden-Doodle, Brownie, and a 4-year-old Poodle, Milky. He enjoys serving his community by actively helping rescue groups and shelter pets, and in his free time, he plays volleyball.
Dr. Raam Krishna Karanam
Veterinary Director & Chief of Operations
Dr. Vani Jhaveri
Unfortunately, her passion for working with horses didn’t match the limited scope to do so in India, so she began pursuing her licensing exams to move to the USA. While in the process of doing so in the midst of COVID, she began her own private mobile practice, attending to dogs, cats, and horses in and around the city during and after the pandemic. She finally completed her North American Veterinary Licensing in 2022 and moved to North Carolina soon after.
Dr. Amanda Matrai
Upon completing her North American Veterinary Licensing, she has been working at Walnut St. Animal Hospital where she enjoys helping her patients while using the Fear-Free approach to minimize their stress and anxiety.
Outside work Dr. Matrai enjoys spending time with her husband and her two loving cats, Jinx and Rico. Her personal interests are pottery, swimming, martial arts, and outdoor activities.
Dr. Tiana Montell
Dr. Montell knew she wanted to be a vet ever since middle school, and feels she definitely chose the right career. When seeing patients, she aims to develop a strong doctor-client relationship and to practice fear-free medicine. She has a special interest in geriatric pet care, dermatology, and surgery. She has two dogs of her own; an 8 yr old Goldendoodle, Gracie, and a 3 yr old American Bully, Storm.
In her free time, Dr. Montell loves to spend time at the beach with her boyfriend and dogs. She also loves to fish, travel, and go out to eat.
Sarah Van Staalduinen
Hello! My name is Caitlin, and I have been with Walnut Street Animal
Hospital since 2017. I started out as a receptionist and after being with this
practice for a year, I was promoted to Manager and transferred to our sister
location, Capital Boulevard Animal Hospital. I absolutely loved the
experience of opening a new clinic and getting acquainted with all of the
I am excited to start my new role as Client Coordinator with the company. I
have always loved working with clients and making sure the owner and
furbaby have a positive experience.
In my free time, I am with my 2 human kiddos as well as my own furbabies.
In 2018, I fell in love with rescue shelter nursing and decided during COVID to work in a companion animal hospital. I am Cat Mom to Xena, a grey tabby, Snickers, a gorgeous calico, and Bella, my rescued tortie. I also work as Veterinary Technician for Purr Partners Feline Rescue, and volunteer with Operation Catnip Raleigh and a Wake County social services agency.
In my spare time, I study at Wake Technical Community College and Penn Foster’s RVT program. A native of Wilmington, NC, I enjoy beaches and hiking.
Born and raised in Michigan, I moved to North Carolina on a whim and have been with Maynard Animal Hospital for almost a year. I had only been working in the veterinary field for around six months when Maynard took me on as an assistant, and I couldn't be happier. I enjoy working here so much (even on stressful days), and I adore my coworkers to my core. There's really not much more I could ask for in a workplace.
While I don't currently have any kiddos of my own, you'll often hear me talk about my family dogs, a 14-year-old Jack Russell Brussel Griffon named Lucky and a 5-year-old Havanese named Castiel (Cas for short). Those two single-pawedly jumpstarted my undying love for little dogs, and having dogs all my life definitely played a role in my interest in veterinary medicine. I love them both to bits and miss them every day. Thankfully, my mom keeps me updated with frequent pictures, who knows what I'd do otherwise.
Outside of work, you can usually find me playing video games with my friends, writing silly convoluted stories, singing a LOT (I must drive my coworkers crazy; Bless their hearts!), reading manga, or watching anime. Gotta enjoy the simple things in life, right?
It's been such an exhilarating experience getting to know and work with our amazing clientele and their precious kiddos. I've already learned an incredible amount in my short time here, and I'm so excited to continue to cultivate my breadth of knowledge to help provide as best care to your babies as I possibly can!
